Copying categories

How to transfer categories from wholesaler to your store.

The website dedicated to transferring categories consists of one panel divided into two parts.

On the left there is a list of categories imported from the warehouse - it can be in the form of a tree (categories containing subcategories) or a flat structure (all categories are at the same level).

Hint:

Categories that do not have a counterpart in your store (not copied, added automatically or mapped) are marked in red.

On the right there are categories in your store - if they have not been created before, at least one parent category should be in here.

In the upper part of the panel, there are two empty fields and the "Copy category" button.

Warning!

Copying a category does not add products to the store! They can be added with the use of a manually initiated full update or by a suitably set automatic update (more on that in chapters "Automatic update" and "Full update").

How do I copy categories to my store?

To duplicate a category from the warehouse in your store, select it from the list on the left, and then select the target location from the list on the right.

For categories containing subcategories, the entire tree fragment will be copied.

After selecting the source and target categories, confirm the copying by clicking the "Copy categories" button.

Warning!

Some store platforms do not allow us to delete categories on the integrator level. In such a situation, if the icon [X] on the list of store categories does not respond, go to your store management panel and use it to delete incorrectly added categories.

Example:

Suppose the warehouse has the following product categories:

MAIN CATEGORY ↳ Fashion ↳ Pants ↳ Men's ↳ Women's ↳ Blouses ↳ Men's ↳ Women's ↳ Jackets ↳ Men's ↳ Women's

And your store only contains the parent category:

MAIN CATEGORY

Selecting the "Fashion" category on the left and "MAIN CATEGORY" on the right will copy the entire tree from the warehouse to your store.

Selecting the "Pants" category on the left and "MAIN CATEGORY" on the right will copy the "Pants" category with the "Men's" and "Women's" subcategories.

The problem may occur when your store has only products intended for women - then copying "Pants" would require removing the "Men's" subcategory from the store and would include the unnecessary "Women's" subcategory, while copying only the "Women" subcategory from "Pants" , "Blouses" and "Jackets" would result in three categories with the same name in your store.

In this case, there are two solutions:

  • creating categories in the store manually and mapping them (chapter "Mapping categories")

  • changing the structure of the category list from the wholesaler to flat (contact us for this)

Changing the structure of categories from the warehouse modifies their names, adding all parent categories to them. The transformed list in this example would look like this:

MAIN CATEGORY ↳ Fashion ↳ Fashion >> Pants ↳ Fashion >> Pants >> Men's ↳ Fashion >> Pants >> Women's ↳ Fashion >> Blouses ↳ Fashion >> Blouses >> Men's ...

This way copying the category "Fashion >> Pants >> Women" gives clear indication in the store which products it includes. Of course, the category name can be changed later in the store management panel.
